Horse Buying Process
Embarking on the journey to purchase a horse can be a complex and demanding. Our process ensures thoroughness and transparency every step of the way.
Initial Consultation
We begin by discussing your budget and expectations. The value of horses and ponies varies based on age, show record, rideability, and movement.
Search and Evaluation
We contact trainers, brokers, and breeders to identify potential matches for your riding level. This involves extensive legwork, including numerous conversations, video evaluations, and consultations with various professionals.
Trial Process
We may visit horse shows or other stables to assess horses of interest. If a horse appears to be a good fit, we will attempt to bring it to our stable for a trial period. Please note, not all owners permit trials.
Client Responsibilities and Costs
Off-site Day Charge: $200 per day per student, covering the trainer's advice, coaching, and riding.
Out-of-Pocket Expenses: These include travel, gas, accommodation, airfare, food, etc.
On-site Trial Charge: $70 per day, which includes board, grooming, professional riding, and lessons.
Trial Agreement/Insurance: You may need to sign a trial agreement or pay for a week of insurance while the horse is in your care.
Vetting and Finalizing the Purchase
We will guide you through the vetting process if you decide to proceed. A credit card is required on file with the vet before the appointment. Our staff will always be present during the vetting.
Price Negotiation and Additional Costs
Price Negotiation: The price can be negotiated post-vetting, though not all owners will accept an offer.
Delivery Costs: If you do not purchase the horse, you are responsible for the delivery to our stables and return costs.
Trial Costs: You are responsible for any expenses incurred during the trial, such as shoeing. The horse must be returned in the condition it was sent.
Commission: A 15% commission on the horse's sale price applies. This covers all efforts made on your behalf to find a suitable horse. For horses priced at $10,000 or less, a flat commission of $1,000 applies. Your day charge will be deducted from your commission after the sale. Commissions are standard industry practice and range from 10%-20%, depending on location and personnel. Commissions are non-negotiable.
Documentation
We will compile and provide the client's bill of sale, registration papers, and medical history.
Our comprehensive process is designed to ensure that you find the right horse while being fully informed and supported throughout the journey.
